The Animation of Alex Grigg

Hi, thanks so for stopping by. You’ve found the online home of me, Alex Grigg. I’m an animation director based in Australia and have spent the last 15 years bringing pictures to life. You can find my full portfolio here.

My Background.

I went to animation school in Brisbane, Australia and quickly fell in love with almost every aspect of filmmaking. After I graduated I began working with some of the best animation professionals in the world including Nexus, Buck, Blink Ink, Passion Pictures and Mighty Nice. During this time I was animating, designing and learning as much as I could about my craft. I made my first personal short film in 2014 and since then I’ve been working primarily as an animation director, creating work for clients such as Cartoon Network, Apple, Samsung and Procreate.

What I do for clients

Clients typically hire me as a director and I help them create animation that has a craft, wit and charm. Directing can mean different things to different people and is largely dictated by the scope of the project we’re making. I might work in a larger team where I muster the enormous creative talents of the animators and artists I’m collaborating with, or it could simply mean that I’m the sole creative voice in a project and handle everything from the writing to design and animation. No matter the size of the production my goal is to understand my client’s goals deeply and use that understanding to create something that connects with the audience in a meaningful way.

What I do for myself.

My personal animation practice is the creative engine that keeps me going. I love drawing, exploring weird ideas, and ruminating on hard to explain feelings. These all bubble up in strange and unexpected ways as I try to capture them within my personal work.

My personal work has found an audience at film festivals around the world as well a lovely following online.

What I do for students.

I love making animation and I’m pretty sure plenty of people will feel the same way if they have the opportunity to try it out. Making easily accessible Animation eduction is something I really care about. That’s why I’ve poured most of my free time over the last few years into a free animation resource called Animation for Anyone. Its a place for me to explain the fundamental ideas the masters of animation have discovered over the last century in a new, easily understandable way.

I’ve also begun to make affordable training for people who want to extend their animation knowledge. My first course, Mastering Procreate Dreams is available here.
